How to Beat the Instagram Algorithm

Here are a few tips to beat the Instagram algorithm!

You may already know that in 2016 Instagram incorporated an algorithm into its feed. Users are still unsure of how this works but Instagram has assured us that our feed is now ‘ordered to show the moments we believe you will care about the most.’ To some user’s this sounds great, we get to see our friends posts first and we don’t have to search as much for the content that we wish to view. However, this is bad news for businesses; if their viewers do not engage with their posts through likes and comments, the algorithm has the potential to hide their activity.

Here are some quick tips to help you beat the algorithm.

 Timing

Be mindful of the time of day that you post your images… most people work full time and they’ll only be able to view your posts before work, mid-day, lunch time and in the evening. The algorithm likes to show us the most recently uploaded pictures, so if your company uploads an image at 10am on a Thursday morning, you probably aren’t going to get the same amount of engagement as you would at 8pm when people are out of work. You could also schedule your posts on the weekend when followers are most active.

Engagement

Make sure that you are posting quality content so that your followers will engage with it and make the decision to check your feed more often. Having a themed Instagram page might aid with this so that your page looks more professional; it also shows the viewer what type of a brand you are. This is where you can showcase your brand personality, think of a consistent use of colours and images. Also check out companies and brands that you would wish to connect with, comment and like their content so that they notice you! It’s a great way to begin the process of networking by starting a conversation.

Hashtags

It is important not to get too carried away with hashtags. Whilst it is still necessary to use them, if your viewer is being inundated with too many they may not take your post seriously. The best way to use hashtags is to follow trending topics or even create your own bespoke hashtag which is relevant to your brand.
